Field Notes: Pip's Search for the Perfect 4B Pencil

Penned on Friday, September 11, 2026

Pip refuses to work with anything harder than a 2B. "An H pencil," Pip remarked (via a series of high-pitched chirps and frantic head nods), "is like trying to skate on concrete with dry needles."

So yesterday we staged an official test across three different sketchbooks:

  • HB: Reliable, utilitarian, but lacks theatrical drama.
  • 2B: The everyday champion. Buttery smooth, dark enough to scan without contrast gymnastics.
  • 4B: Rich, velvety, smudges like a secret in a spy movie. Pip's personal favorite.
  • 6B: Pure charcoal madness. One careless sneeze and your entire arm is covered in graphite powder.

Verdict: Keep a soft pencil near your desk at all times. A dark, soft line forgives your hesitation and rewards your boldness.
